Generation explores the accrual of intimate habits of racism, gender dynamics and domesticity in the body in the artist’s grandparent’s home in Windhoek, Namibia. It shows their family in a home where she spent her formative years. This work probes the relationships between the production and maintenance of power through the use of documentary footage, photographs, a script drawn from interviews with her grandparents, Jack and Rosemary, and Mama Lea, their employee, as well as studio footage. It explores intimacy in a site of often claustrophobic proximity where agency and power are enmeshed, contested, shifting. Generation looks to the raw discomfort of domesticity within the legacies of class, race and gender in contemporary Namibia and South Africa.
