SHIFTINGS
1 tonne of soil, flexiply, ratchet strap, people’s help
Durational performance + sculpture
2022
Shiftings (2022) is a participatory performance for Fertile Ground at SZN, London. The soil of the sculpture was later dismantled (you can see photos below) and donated to Phytology at the Bethnal Green Nature Reserve. It has its name lifted from a quote from philosopher Peter Pál Pelbert that Brazilian journalist Eliane Brum uses in her book Banzeiro Òkòtó. She says, with Pelbert, that we need to get unstuck from ourselves, that we need to unsettle and seek out 'unprecedented shiftings' so we can make space for ways of being other than that of capitalism and the many violences it feeds.
The sculpture being dismantled and cleared of detritus at the end of the exhibition, before being taken on to the Bethnal Green Nature Reserve.
With much thanks and appreciation to Lewis Bell, Pierina Mendoza and Pablo Ortega.
The sculpture removed and taken to Phytology at Bethnal Green Nature Reserve, with the plastic and detritus gathered from it left behind
